Countries like Canada and the United States have four distinct seasons.
Having a variety of blankets and comforters in your home can be the difference between a family that sleeps soundly year-round, or one that is too hot in the summer, or too cold in the winter.
What’s the difference between a duvet and a standard comforter?
Duvet comforters are generally made up of two machine washable parts:
A duvet cover is a cotton shell and doesn’t provide warmth. It encases a duvet, similar to how a pillowcase covers a pillow.
The purpose of the duvet cover is to keep your down comforter clean and add a decorative touch to your bed. Duvets are generally pure white, while there are many colours and patterns of duvet covers on the market.
Typically, a standard comforter is a thicker, quilted, fluffy blanket that keeps you nice and warm. They’re recommended for children, or for anyone who has pets visiting them at night.
They are usually filled with synthetic fibre filler that’s quilted or stitched to secure the filling and keep it evenly distributed. Unlike a duvet, a comforter comes in one piece.
How often should you replace a duvet?
Martha Stewart—of home decorating and culinary fame—says quality comforters and duvets should last between15 and 25 years.
Duvets should be washed every few months or at least twice a year.
How to clean your duvet
If the duvet has a down-alternative filling, wash it at 60 degrees C to kill off dust mites.
It’s always safest to check the instructions on the label or package with your duvet or comfortable to ensure it lasts as long as possible.
Martha Stewart would be proud of you for taking such pride and care of your bedding.
What’s the difference between a coverlet and a duvet?
A coverlet is a lightweight, non-reversible bedspread made of quilted or woven materials.
Traditionally designed as a decorative layer to go over thicker bedspreads, coverlets often have a thin layer of batting, making them appropriate for use as a stand-alone bed covering, depending on the weight and the room temperature.
What's the difference between a comforter and a quilt?
- A quilt or other standard blanket is also used to stay warm, but it is usually a single layer bed covering made from woollen material.
- Duvet covers are thicker than bedsheets but are made of different materials than quilts, and they can be washed separately from the duvet comforter.
- A comforter is also a thick bedspread, like a quilt. The differences between quilts and comforters are that quilts are made of woven cloth, with an internal layer of cotton batting, while duvet comforters generally filled with feathers or goose down.
Can you use a comforter as a blanket?
In order to maintain a new duvet comforter, we recommend that you use a duvet cover.
A duvet cover will protect the down blanket or comforter, and a cover is easier to clean than a large comforter.
Putting the duvet cover on is often great fun, as you can crawl inside the cover to ensure the duvet is spread evenly and meets all four corners. Some people use clips to ensure the duvet doesn’t shift during the night.
Is a duvet lighter than a comforter?
Sometimes referred to as a comforter (especially in the United States), a duvet is a type of bedding that is like a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers, wool, or a synthetic down alternative.
Adding a duvet to your bed simplifies the daily chore of bed-making, and adds a touch of relaxed elegance to a bedroom.
Are duvets better than comforters?
Like most things, what’s better for your needs doesn’t always hold true for everyone.
For those who prioritize premium tactile feel and aesthetics over affordability and durability, duvet comforters are ideal for those who want a sleeping environment that’s like an oasis of tranquillity.
With a comforter (or multiple duvet covers), you can also quickly and easily change the look of your bedroom without having to completely redecorate. There are generally more standard comforters with whimsical children’s patterns than for duvets.
